If you follow me on instagram I’m sure you have seen me mention Aura Beauty Spa countless times. After looking at a few of the pictures above I’m sure you can see why now, their spa is absolutely darling! Going to get a service done at Aura is an experience. One that transports you into the most chic, feminine, and relaxing space that gives you this “can I just live here please?” feeling.
Now let’s get to what you all came here for- Dermaplane.
*pause for a brief definition* 🙂
Dermaplane: Dermaplaning is a safe (provided the person performing it is properly trained) and highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair (aka peach fuzz).
My favorite thing about Meralyn (owner of the spa) is her immense knowledge on all the services she does. Well that, and the fact that she is just about the cutest little thing you’ve ever seen, but back to her being really qualified and stuff. HA! I knew I wanted to get a facial but wasn’t quite sure exactly what I wanted. Our goal was to get my skin ready for my wedding coming up in September. She started examining my skin and immediately recommended we try dermaplane , and A LOT of it and went on to explain why my skin was in baaaad shape.
Hold up, excuse me??? This girl right here doesn’t miss a face wash, moisturizes day and night, puts on masks weekly and you mean to tell me it’s not enough?! HA!
However I trusted Meralyn because I knew this girl knows her stuff. But sure enough as she started the procedure I was mortified at just how much dirt, dead skin, and grim she was scraping off my face. Not to mention the fact that we discovered I am quite possibly the hairiest human alive because the amount of hair she removed from my face made us giggle. Moral of the story, I basically looked like a liar for telling her how well I took care of my skin prior and couldn’t wait to come back and have it done again.
After posting about my results on insta stories I got an overwhelming response from all of you wanting to know more so, I deciding to make this post. In answer to some of those commonly asked questions and concerns I will list both my experience and answer some of those on here in case you might have the same one!
The first dermaplane I had we learned that my skin was very sensitive. It was so uncomfortable as she scraped my face and when she went to do the peel my skin was on fire! It stayed pretty red and irritated in the days after and because all that dirt was brought to the surface, I broke out a little bit. Although it felt so smooth from the hair being removed, I could tell my skin was thirsty. I drank a lot of water, and put on a moisture heavy cream day and night to bring it the amount of hydration it was lacking. I blame all my spray tans for that ultra dry skin! haha I noticed my makeup went on like butter! As the irritation calmed down I noticed that my pores appeared smaller and all around just evened out my skin tone. I also had some texture on my skin prior and it was completely gone. I was also getting comments on my skin from friends that noticed a difference in the appearance of it. Needless to say, I was hooked.
The second round of dermaplane was an almost entirely different experience. It was 100% painless and my skin was red afterwards, but was completely fine about an hour after. MY SKIN FELT UNREAL. So hydrated, smooth, supple and appeared brighter/healthier! My results in the 3 days after my first dermaplane were immediate results this second round. We still got a lot of hair, dead skin, and dirt as you can see in the pictures above but- it wasn’t anything near what we had taken off my face the first time. It has entirely changed the tone and texture of my skin for the better. I never knew how much oil and debris gets trapped in your tiny facial hairs until Meralyn told me but, I attribute the removal of that to how well my skin care products performed after dermaplane. It makes sense that your products are able to penetrate the skin more efficiently without it.
I cannot recommend this service enough ya’ll. It has been a game changer for me and I cannot wait to see how my skin changes even more after a few more treatments. If you are wanting instant improvement on your skins texture, tone, and evenness – get this done. A few other great side effects of dermaplane are increased cell turnover , fewer wrinkles, dark spot reduction, acne scarring and the removal of facial hair is just a big ol fat bonus in my opinion!
Commonly asked questions:
Did your hair grow back spikey? : No mine didn’t grow back spikey at all!
Did your hair grow back thicker? : If anything, I feel like less hair has grown back… However I did do some research on this to make sure I could give you the most accurate response and found something pretty comforting to those nervous about this side effect. The hair on the face is called Vellous hairs and it is physiologically impossible to grow back thicker. There are two types of hair that grow on our bodies, Vellous and Terminal hair. Vellous hair is the fine, translucent hair that you can find on your cheeks, jaw and neck – often referred to as “peach fuzz”. Terminal hair is thicker, colored hair that grows under the arms, legs, eye brows. Terminal hair we remove with laser hair removal. When Vellous hair is cut the structure of the hair does not become damaged, therefore it is impossible to alter.
Will it hurt ? : In short no, but I did experience some discomfort my first time. I think that was just because my skin was SO dry. But it definitely didn’t “hurt”
I have acne prone skin, will this help clear it up? I did some research on this as well and found that this procedure is good for helping reduce acne scarring but, is not the service for you if you have acne prone skin. Chemical peels are a much better for your skin type to bring exfoliation and balance to the skin.
How much does dermaplane cost ? : This will for sure vary at different spa’s but at Aura this service is $110 and trust me, it’s worth every penny!
If you are in the OKC/Norman area I highly recommend getting this done at Aura Beauty Spa+ Studio. Heck I drive all the way from Tulsa to get mine done still! haha Click here to read about all their services and book an appointment!
